Hairpin Leg Entertainment Console by Raulo

We love to see what great creations folks come up with for their hairpin leg projects. Here is a great entertainment console made by Raulo. This piece is made using dark wood and utilizes a classic hairpin leg style. The natural materials of the wood and metal console nicely offset the modern materials of the entertainment items themselves.

With the option of wall-mounted televisions, the console can offer even more options whether it is holding up the television itself or other just the associated devices like a cable box, DVR or stereo. This entertainment console would look good in any setting from a modern home to a classically designed home – or against wood or brick as it is here – this piece will offer style to any setting. If you live in the LA area, and want to see more from Raulo, head over to his Yelp profile and see the newest designs.

One of the best qualities of hairpin legs is that they go anywhere. They are great for any type of furniture: entertainment consoles, end tables, coffee tables, desks, and the list goes on. So if it’s time to upgrade your entertainment console or any other piece of furniture in your place, imagine how great a DIY furniture project will look…and if you can dream it up, we have custom metal legs to help you finish your project.

Every set of hairpin legs we create are made to order right here in Colorado so you know you’re getting hand made quality, and a set of legs made just for your project. We’d love to see what you come up with so send us a pic of your creation when it’s ready!

Jamie’s Upholstered Ottomans with Hairpin Legs

upholstered ottoman with hairpin legs

The most common hairpin leg furniture we see consists of some variation of a wooden top supported by our custom metal legs, but there are many ways to go about using metal legs – this Ottoman set is a great reminder that the possibilities are endless!

Upholstered furniture adds cushion and comfort, and it opens up a whole new world of colors and textures. Jamie has chosen a very upbeat and festive color scheme and design for the ottoman set. Upholstered furniture can easily be made from smaller bits of cloth you already have and like.

Jamie upcycles upholstery when making furniture which is another great way to go about making a DIY project. And of course upholstery can be made to match existing colors and cloths in your home. So think about restoring an existing piece of furniture you have with a new set of hair pin legs – or making a whole new piece of furniture from start to finish. Either way we have hairpin legs that will suit your project.

We offer hairpin legs from 4-inches to 30-inches tall. This allows for projects that take shorter legs – like an ottoman – to those that require taller legs like a desk or table. Chevron Pallet Coffee Table with Hairpin Legs

chevron coffee table with hairpin legs

You may see the term thrown around a lot these days, but for the uninitiated, a chevron (or cheveron) is a V-shaped pattern…sometimes made into a repeating design. The roots of this design are ancient and it can be seen in early art such as on pottery and rock carvings that date as far back as 1800 BC. Ancient roots aside, it is a simple pattern that catches the eye and adds a lot of depth to a DIY table. The folks at 101Pallets.com have put together a great chevron table using pallets.

diy chevron coffee table with hairpin legsWe can’t say enough great things about the low cost and easily reusable pallet. As you can guess, neither can the folks at 101 Pallets. This table utilizes the V-pattern on the tabletop, frames the pattern in wood, and then pairs it with classic hairpin legs. Not only do the hairpin legs emphasize the tabletop without dominating the show, but their soft curves coupled with straight solid lines compliment the chevron design.

Here at Modern Legs we make a variety of hairpin legs and supply anyone from commercial furniture makers to the first-time DIY furniture maker. We have lots of styles to choose from such as the classic hairpin leg used here to the 3 Rod hairpin leg, the “Just the Tip” leg, and more. And all of our metal hairpin legs come in a variety of sizes so you can easily make any table you can imagine – from a dining room table, to a desk, to the coffee table you see here.

Glass Topped Cherry Table with Tapered Angle Iron Legs

tapered angle iron legs

We say this a lot, but we love seeing an old piece of furniture turned into a new one. Joan chose our tapered angle iron legs instead of one of our many hairpin leg styles. Her feeling was that the angle iron legs would share the sturdy, blocky feel of the tabletop and we agree!

glass top table with tapered angle iron legs

This is a table made with 100+ year old cherry that has been covered with glass. We’ve seen other customers cover tabletops with glass as well, and a glass covering does a number of things. First of all it protects the tabletop itself. Spills or damp materials that might otherwise damage antique or untreated wood will be well protected by a thick piece of glass. Secondly, it puts the tabletop on display. A glass covered tabletop highlights the unique features and draws the eye to the tabletop itself.

A third great reason to add glass to the top of your table is the added options it provides. Wood that is slatted, uneven, or otherwise not flat is given a flat surface with glass—allowing nearly any building material to become a tabletop. One of the things Joan appreciated about our metal legs is,

the fact that we could order legs to make an optimal height table for computer use

To ensure the table is just the right height for you, measure the thickness of your tabletop –and glass if you’ll be adding that to the top–and subtract that sum from the overall height you want your table. We offer modern metal legs (including hair pin legs) in many different heights so you’ll have lots of options to make sure your future table is just the height that works for you. Thanks for sharing Joan, we love the table!

Hairpin Legs with Sealed Patina by Mike

3 rod hairpin leg workbench

Our metal hairpin legs are designed to last—heck, they are made of ½ inch steel! The legs can weather the typical use of any table leg with flying colors. Leaving them just the way they are when you take them out of the box is just fine. Or you can dress them up a bit with paint or further protect them with a clear coat.

3 rod hairpin leg workbench with patina

Mike decided to dress his 3 rod hairpin legs up a bit by allowing they to rust a little bit and then preserving the finish. Mike used lemon juice to add a fine patina and then sealed that in, creating a look his clients were looking for. Here’s what Mike had to say:

My client wanted a “classy workbench” and his wife suggested using hairpin legs to give it a modern, lighter appearance. I took those two design desires and turned this out. Your hairpin legs were first oxidized using about 2 gallons of lemon juice and a six-hour bath in plastic trough, then dried and hand waxed to preserve the patina. Thanks again for the great product.

Metal legs will be great for use on a workbench. They are durable and won’t be easily banged up like wooden legs can be in a working environment. Thank you for sharing Mike! The finished piece looks great and thanks for sharing another great way to use hairpin legs.

Whether you’re using our hairpin legs for yourself or for a client, there are many ways to dress up the metal legs to further customize them for a specific project. From painting to oiling to oxidizing, let us know if you come up with a great way to finish your metal hairpin legs!

Annie’s Live Edge Conference Room Table with Bench Legs

live edge conference table with metal bench legs

Here at Modern Legs we love what we do – making metal legs. But even more, we love seeing what our customers do with them. A custom made piece of furniture can really dress up any space it’s added to. Sometimes a unique piece of furniture transforms an office or a home into something amazing, instead of the cookie cutter feeling so many workplaces have. Office spaces tend to be standardized and less imaginative that our homes.

Annie has made sure that won’t be said of this conference room. The table she constructed transforms the atmosphere of the room and nicely brings together all other aspects of the room from the wood décor to the metal support structure. The wood is a gorgeous live edge piece that brings the wildness of the tree into the more sterile interior world. Annie has used metal bench legs to create a simple yet strong supportive look for this conference room table.

The metal bench legs…or should we say, metal table legs are a solid metal leg style that offers great stability and can handle heavier loads than standalone legs. We offer two styles – tube steel and flat bar – in standard and custom heights. Get in touch if you want to make a custom piece like this and chances are we’ll be able to come up with a perfect fit for the table, bench or anything else you’re thinking of building. Great job Annie! We’re proud to share your piece as inspiration for others, and we know you’ll get compliments on the table for years to come.

Hairpin Legs and Pallet Upcycling in Britain

pallet table with three rod hairpin legs

Pallets are one of our favorite furniture building materials. It is not just the fact that using pallets saves them from the landfill and you’re reusing something instead of buying new. The uniqueness of each pallet is so much fun. Taking a rough beat up pallet home without even knowing what wood it is made of is all part of the mystery. In no time at all this discarded packing material has turned into a beautiful piece of furniture. Pallets are great for beginners as they can remove the stress that comes with first-time furniture building. With a pallet, every cut doesn’t have to be perfect the first time. If you finish your first tabletop and don’t like it, source a new pallet and start over!

pallet table with 3 rod hairpin legsPallets aren’t just for those undertaking their first DIY project. In fact, there are folks who make a business out of making pallet furniture. Here’s a pallet table from a team of builders in Britain who are upcycling pallets for their business Remade in Britain. For this coffee table they have used three rod hairpin legs like those we offer. Although there are many options on how to finish (or not) your pallet wood, this table has been sanded smooth and each pallet table will be completely unique as every pallet is different.

All of our hairpin legs go wonderfully with pallet tabletops – as well as other types of pallet furniture. So whether its your first DIY furniture project or one of many, check out our extensive selection of metal hairpin legs, pick up a pallet from a local business and get started. Who knows, maybe you’ll build more than one pallet furniture project, and we’d be happy to supply the hairpin legs to help you get started!

Hairpin Leg DIY Nightstand by Elyse

bedside table with short hairpin legs

Here at Modern Legs we offer lots of style and size options for our hairpin legs. And this table is a great example of why we do that. This is a beautiful night stand made by Elyse.

bedside table with short hairpin legs

As you can see the hairpin legs are much shorter than the standard 16” coffee table size to accommodate the greater height of the wooden tabletop. One nice thing about hairpin legs is that it raises the table to just the height you need while still providing room underneath. This provides foot room for coffee tables and dining room tables, it makes room for storage underneath, and provides more light and airflow for an open feel to the room.

This nightstand combines round and square angles well and will be a very functional stand for years to come. Elyse did a great job of matching the finished piece to the wood bed in the room–both are on short legs.

Our metal hairpin legs come in even measurements from 4” to 30” to provide you with metal legs that will work well on your next table build. We also offer them in multiple diameters to best meet your table load and if there’s a project you have in mind that would be best suited to custom sizes, drop us a line and let us know what you have in mind; chances are we’ll be able to accommodate. We look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Beautiful Tables with 3 Rod Hairpin Legs

live edge coffee table hairpin legs

Bent metal hairpin legs come in many different shapes and sizes. There are–of course–the standard bent metal hairpin leg that we call ‘the classic’ hairpin leg, but there are other types as well. The 3 rod hairpin leg is one such variation. Just as the name suggests, there is a third support added to these hairpin legs to give added support as well as another style option. This beautiful table is a great example of the 3 rod hairpin legs on a final piece. The tabletop has been made with different colored woods which nicely displays the color and highlights the wood as well as the design layout.

modern wood table with 3 rod hairpin legs

Notice the subtle design features that make this table so nice. The tabletop is made of a neutral wood color that has its own color variations. Then a lighter colored wood has been added perpendicular to the direction of the rest of the wood which brings both color and directional contrast. The tabletop has been framed in a dark wood which adds yet another layer of contrast. This framing has been screwed in and instead of leaving the screws exposed, the builder decided to create a more finished look of plugging the screws. The plugs could have been made from the same dark wood of the framing but a light wood was chosen to again add contrast and highlight the plugs themselves.

In addition to the well thought out tabletop, the placement of the hairpin legs was very intentional as well. Attaching metal legs in the outer corners of the tabletop often works well. In this instance the legs are attached back from the corners a bit on opposite sides of the table. This will allow for more leg access room to those sitting at the ends of the table. This piece was nicely done and a great way to use the three rod hairpin legs. Making a tabletop for your hairpin legs can be an elaborate project like this or something as easy as repurposing some wood already have around the house or barn. Either way, our hairpin legs, three rod or otherwise, will serve you well. Happy building!

Window Table with Tapered Angle Iron Legs

window frame table with tapered angle iron legs

No, that’s not a typo, this really is a ‘window table’ and it’s a unique piece we had to share. This customer did a great job of upcycling and created a great table in the process. During a house renovation windows were being replaced so this customer made one of the windows into a coffee table using our tapered angle iron legs.

This table has a very unique look and keeping the old hardware on the window adds to its character. The old-school look of the tapered angle iron legs went perfectly with the vintage window…in fact it almost looks like the window is in a new frame the way these metal legs form a solid square around the window. The other great aspect of the window table is the light it lets through. It really keeps the room open and light with the added light on the floor under the table. What a great idea!

Our tapered angle iron legs are a great option in addition to the metal hairpin legs and bench legs we offer. We hope that offering a variety of metal legs allows you to find the perfect match for your next DIY project, and we’re pretty sure this project proves it! Whether you’ve got a tabletop in need of metal legs or a project you’re making from scratch, there are lots of great options to make a unique and functional piece. And don’t forget to send us photos of whatever you come up with!
