Do Hairpin Legs Need Protection?

patio table with painted hairpin legs

All of our metal legs are made of 100% US steel, and we’re proud of that. They are great for durability and longevity, but what if you live in a harsh climate that has lots of environmental factors such as humidity or high salt content…say right near the ocean? Our legs are thick and durable and even with salt in the environment they will still last a long time.

A half-inch of steel is a lot of steel – even left alone in a rough environment there will be years of use–probably decades–before the metal would start to downgrade. But there are ways you can protect your metal legs. The easiest protection is to wax the hairpin legs. This provides a clear coating that retains the look of the metal legs while sealing out moisture and contaminants.

Our hairpin legs can also be clear coated with a metal sealant, which will maintain the classic look of the leg while adding a more durable coating – and adding a higher gloss look. Clear coating will provide a longer lasting finish than wax but takes longer to dry – and don’t forget to apply it in a well ventilated area. Yet another option is applying gun blue to the metal legs. This can be done alone or with a layer of wax over it and adds a deep color to the legs.

If color is something you are interested in, painting is a great option for hairpin legs. Choosing a paint that is intended for use on metal will provide the correct adherence and protection qualities. Or if you want a removable solution, try Plasti Dip. It’s a spray on paint that comes in many colors and can be peeled off later if you change your mind.

No matter what protection you decide to use on your metal legs, be sure to remove dust, moisture and any other particulate matter before applying and follow all of the manufacturer instructions. And don’t forget to have fun! We look forward to seeing what you come up with so send us a pic!

Tips for Attaching Metal Legs to a Wood Surface

3 rod hairpin leg baseplate

Taking a few minutes to plan how to attaching metal legs to a wooden surface properly can ensure that you’ll have a strong durable piece of furniture for years to come! Our hairpin legs and bench legs are designed to be easily attached to the surface you’re working with, but we do have a few tips. The metal legs are made with a top plate with holes for easy attachment to the wooden surface they will be supporting. But how do you go about attaching the legs themselves?

We recommend wood screws that are no more than three quarters the depth of the wood surface you will be attaching the legs to. If you’re comfortable, drill pilot holes about half the diameter of the screw which will help prevent cracking when the screws are drilled in. These are the general guidelines we recommend, but definitely ask an experienced friend for help if you’re unsure how exactly to go about the process; your local hardware store should be able to point you in the right direction. If the screws you are using a little longer than the project calls for, you can adjust for height by using washers. Washers will also help spread the pressure generated by the screw, creating a longer lasting fit.

If you’re not using a traditional board top but are instead using a chest or dresser, see how much depth you have to work with where the screws will be attached – you don’t want screws sticking up into the usable space of the furniture. Have fun putting your own piece of furniture together – and don’t forget to plan before you drill! Once your metal legs are attached you’ll be the proud owner of hairpin leg furniture that will last for years to come!

Just How Big are Those Hairpin Legs?

hairpin legs on truck

Perhaps half of and inch or three-eighths of an inch don’t seem that large in the scheme of things, but the diameters of our metal legs are quite substantial when it comes to table legs. We’ve had many customers ask about our legs ahead of time and express their appreciation for the durability of our table legs after the fact, so to illustrate the size of the legs, we took a few photos. All diameters of our hairpin legs are made from high quality cold rolled steel, which adds strength and makes them less brittle. And we offer different size dimensions on nearly all of our hairpin legs. In addition to the diameters we also create varied heights from 4 to 36 inches.

Many of our customers are aware that just because something is made of metal doesn’t automatically mean they are durable. The quality of our welds and the time we spend on each piece as well as the materials we use make all the difference. Take our bench legs for example. They come in two different designs – flat bar and tube steel. They both have a distinct look and we make sure they are welded, retouched and treated properly. Barring a hurricane, our legs should pretty well last forever!

A light-duty project can benefit from half inch hairpin legs. You’ll still have the functionality you’re looking for from the final product without overbuilding it. And for the heavier-duty pieces, we offer both heavier diameters and styles. The three-rod hairpin leg for instance is a great option for bearing lots of weight, and it brings a unique look to your furniture as well. If you’re ever in doubt about what legs are a good fit, just ask! Let us know what you’ve got in mind and we’re confident we’ve got a set of metal legs that will meet your needs! Don’t forget to send us a picture of what you’ve come up with!

Hairpin Legs and Repurposed Tabletops

unfinished wood bench with hairpin legs

Using distressed or weathered wood or reclaiming wood for a DIY furniture project is a great option and a rewarding process. There are many pieces of perfectly good – and beautiful – wood that can be turned into a great piece of furniture for use with our metal hairpin legs. The wood can be completely refinished for a clean fresh look. Planing, sanding, and finishing old wood makes a beautifully aged piece of wood come alive again and the wood can look like new when you’re done.

reclaimed oak bench with metal bench legsLeaving remnants of the wood’s old life can is also an attractive look. Perhaps you’re using an old door or butcher block that has beautiful hardware or markings that lend uniqueness and character to your furniture. Sanding or planing the wood by hand rather than using power tools will allow you to stop along the way and decide what level of wear or weathering you’d like to leave on the final piece. Determining what type of furniture you’re looking for helps figure out what you want in the final product as well as what style of metal legs will best compliment the piece. A small unobtrusive corner table can handle a different look than a large dining or coffee table could pull off.

To finish the look you’re after, pick out one of our many metal hairpin leg options: the original, the twist, square bar hairpin legs, or metal bench legs. Our legs come in different diameters as well as heights to ensure you get the very best match for your future homemade table!

Orienting Hairpin Legs on a Table

diy coffee table with hairpin table legs

A question we get asked more than you might think is, ‘How should I orient the hairpin legs on the table itself?’ It may seem like a simple question, but once you look around the internet, you’ll see a variety of options.

round table with just the tip hairpin legsIt is a great question and one whose answer depends on each table being made. The standard table legs uses four hairpin legs that are angled outward from the corners of the table to give maximum stability to the table. Although this is the most common leg orientation, this is hardly the only option. Table legs can be placed parallel to the each other as in this round table with Just the Tip legs – the two legs on each side are facing the same direction. This offers a unique look to the table giving it its own character. Not all tables use four legs either – there are applications where either more or less are better suited for your project.

Four legs may be too many for a table being supported by something other than just metal legs, such as a wall or other supporting structure. Stools often use only three legs which alleviates tipping on uneven floors. On the flip side there are furniture pieces that use more than four legs. long coffee table with six hairpin legsA long bench for example can utilize additional legs to add to the overall stability of the piece. So add your own creative touch to your next project and do what’s best for the piece–and for your house. When you arrive at a final decision, send us a picture! We’d love to see what you come up with!

Conference Table with Metal Bench Legs

conference table with metal bench legs

In addition to all the styles of metal hairpin legs we make we also offer metal bench legs in pretty much any configuration, and our top two styles are tube steel bench legs and flat bar bench legs. Bench legs are–of course–used to make benches but they are also well designed for use with tables because they give a great amount of stability with only two legs; creating a simple look and undeniable stability.

conference table with custom metal bench legs

Today we’re sharing a great example of a large conference table made by Bill that uses bench legs. These bench legs are 1-inch by 3-inch raw tubular steel legs. In his own words Bill said,

“I made the table from 1890’s white oak barn wood reclaimed from a barn in Frankenmuth, Michigan. Size is 42” wide x 96” long x 2” thick. [The] legs look awesome with the tabletop. My customer was very pleased.”

The table is solid and stable while leaving ample room for chairs around the table. Sometimes having four traditional table legs at each corner of a table can impede multiple chair use, such as in conference table setting, and the bench legs create the perfect solution.

Our standard bench legs come in two options –flat bar and tube steel bench legs, and they are the standard 15-inch bench height. If you’re interested in a custom height…say, shorter legs for a kids bench or higher ones for a table, contact us through the site and let us know what you’re working on. Chances are we can make you a custom set for your project, and your bench or table can be the next finished piece we share on the blog!

Painted Tables with Hairpin Legs

closeup painted table with hairpin legs

Much of the furniture we see made with our hairpin legs utilizes plain wood paired with the simplicity of the metal legs. Often customers treat wood with simple methods such as staining or clear coating. This affords a classic look to the finished furniture.

Another great option is using paint on the tabletop. This opens up a whole world of options for your hairpin leg furniture. Plain wood can certainly be painted – or perhaps you have a wooden piece that is already painted that you would like to use. You can keep the paint on the piece, refresh the paint with a new coat, or mix coats to create a mottled look. A mottled or intentionally distressed look can be achieved by sanding down a painted piece of wood so part of the wood or undercoat shows through. Some customers paint the entire tabletop while others paint just enough for an accent color.

Painted pieces can be mixed and matched to create a design, and the metal legs themselves can be painted to offer even further color options for your hairpin leg project. We know you’ll have fun picking out the right colors for your table and its surroundings. And of course you get to choose which style of hairpin legs best fit your project – anything from the original hairpin leg to the square bar hairpin leg to our ‘Just the Tip’ legs. All of our legs are made right here in the USA of 100% steel. Have fun painting and send us a picture of what you come up with!
